Transitioning from a successful career in telecommunications, where I sharpened my skills as a systems engineer and project manager, I’ve learned the importance of precision, efficiency, and innovation. These principles have been helpful in my approach to home modifications, improvements, and woodworking.
In telecommunications, my role as a systems engineer taught me to navigate complex problems and develop streamlined, user-centric solutions. As a project manager, I mastered overseeing projects from beginning to end, ensuring they were successful. Now, I apply these same principles to my work in home modifications, using an organized approach that produces practical results.
This blog provides technical insights, practical advice, and creative inspiration from my engineering background and personal experiences in woodworking and home improvement. Whether you’re looking to make minor changes or undertake significant modifications, I’m here to guide you through each step of the process, ensuring your home evolves with you.
Join me as we explore the endless possibilities of home modification, where functionality meets design in the most intimate space we know—our home.
My journey began in 1971 when I joined the United States Air Force (USAF). After basic training, I was assigned to be a Telecommunications Control Specialist. I attended technical school at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi.
My first assignment after technical school was at Ent Air Force Base, where I worked at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Here, I started better understanding the scope of telecommunications and real-world applications. After approximately a year, I got an assignment to England.
I was assigned to RAF Croughton, a United States Air Force communications station in Northamptonshire, England. I worked in an Automatic Digital Network (AUTODIN) center for seven years. During this time, I decided to study more about telecommunications and attended local college classes, ultimately leading to a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Associate in Applied Science for Telecommunications Systems Control Technology.
In 1980, I decided to leave the United States Air Force to pursue a degree and find a job with an engineering company.
My plan to go to a University was changed from going full-time to taking classes part-time since I immediately found a full-time job with The MITRE Corporation. MITRE manages federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) supporting various U.S. government agencies in aviation, defense, healthcare, homeland security, and cybersecurity. After six years of going to classes part-time, I received a Bachelor of Science in Electronics from Chapman University in 1986.
I was a systems engineer at MITRE for 33 years. I increased my systems engineering skills by carefully analyzing complex problems, understanding the technical aspects of the systems, considering how individual pieces fit into and impact the whole system, developing and understanding system requirements, and conducting system integration and testing. As a project manager, I was involved in planning, executing, and overseeing a project to ensure it was completed on time and within budget and scope.
Leveraging my analytical and problem-solving skills as a systems engineer, I now apply my expertise to home enhancement projects encompassing home modifications, improvements, and custom woodworking.
After retiring from MITRE in 2013, I shifted my focus towards home modifications, drawn by their significant impact on quality of life. I dedicated myself to understanding the various modifications that facilitate aging in place, emphasizing safety features and enhancements that increase comfort. These adjustments are carefully selected to create spaces where seniors can live securely and comfortably, reflecting their choice to age in place gracefully
I consider home enhancement projects that improve the overall functionality of living spaces, ensuring they become more user-friendly, accessible, and safe. These projects enhance the aesthetic appeal of a home, blending practicality with style to create environments that are both beautiful and tailored to the homeowner’s lifestyle. Ultimately, the goal is to tailor each space to the specific requirements and preferences of the individual, creating personalized areas that align with their unique needs and tastes.
As I continue to leverage my skills in home enhancement projects, I am excited to share the journey with you. From home modifications to aesthetic improvement ideas and custom woodworking, my blog serves as a resource for those looking to enhance their living spaces with functionality, safety, and style.
